2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Greetings in the name of our Lord! We hope this update finds you well and especially that all is "well with your soul"!
The month of May arrived with heat and humidity! We have certainly not forgotten that we are in the tropics - it is kind of like having a hot wet towel around your face all day. We were excited to have the first rain in about two months last night. "Dry season" has begun!
Many New Friends
We took the opportunity provided by slow season to establish more contacts on the island. We have enjoyed visiting this month with author and speaker Phil Phillips. He has been interviewed on many news and talk shows and written several Christian books including "Helping Your Children Walk with God". He spoke to our church and had a wonderful message about God's faithfulness to His people. Phil is in the pictures above and also assisted in the baptism. We also got to know the Dyar family who leads the Church of God in Honduras and also pastors a church in French Harbor (about a 45 minute drive from us). They live in French Harbor and have been in Roatan for four years. They provide many ministries including a breakfast and lunch feeding program to 100 children each day. It encourages us to see action like this from a solid Biblical church!
R Church
Our church which meets at the Infinity Bay conference room, has continued to attract more locals who want to grow in the Word. We are so thankful to see God at work. Two young ladies who are here working with Ms.Peggy's Clinic were baptized two weeks ago after the service. The baptism was out in the ocean on a very busy beach and (can't tell from pics above but) was witnessed by dozens of vacationers and locals. We pray that God planted seeds in many hearts that day.
Travis continues to preach through the book of John and minister to and counsel many individual needs in our church. We are continuing to help the church become "formally and biblically" organized. It was very loosely organized in the past and the development team realized the need to regroup a bit. It has been a joy to help in this way. We have met wonderful and interesting people who serve the Lord in so many ways. Travis will be giving a Spiritual Gifts test in two weeks to those in the church who would like to take it. Pray that this helps many to get involved in serving the Lord with the gifts He has provided. We are making steps towards organizing R Church this past month. We have written drafts of Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, etc and opened a checking account at a local bank in the Church's name which helps us accept checks.
Children
The children are enjoying being out of school; we concluded home school on the 24th of May. Tish is probably as happy as they are! It was a wonderful school year and we became closer as a family because of it- God certainly had a plan and He is faithful. Travis is also happy to be finished teaching Material Logic to Ella and Zach- he suffered with them and they made it through the book! Now they are able to argue better, so we're not sure that was too helpful. Eli continues to do well and is showing no signs of any lasting damage from his concussions. We are awaiting the final report from a Neurologist in the states.
The boys have spent many days fishing and building forts. Zachary celebrated his 14th birthday with paintball and had a great time shooting people including Dad. They have had a few friends over to help out in their adventures as well and just learned the proper and safe use of a machete. Heather enjoys playing with a local little girl who lives close by. She got braces this month and is adjusting to dealing with them- she looks so much older with them!
Ella continues to plan and select our worship music and does a beautiful job playing piano for worship each Sunday. She has truly developed her gift. Hearing her you would think she is much older than she is. Pretty good for 14!
Tish
Every Wednesday the children and Tish volunteer with the Mazapan school, helping with English class and tutoring. On Thursdays they head to the Children's Home and play games, work puzzles, and sometimes tutor the kids there. Tish has been working with two of the children there who struggle with behavioral outbursts. One little boy she works with had spent time living on the streets when he was six years old. Living behind a restaurant, he learned to fend for himself and protect himself and still has a hard time in group settings. Pray for his heart to be healed. He is bright and has a beautiful smile. He always has a hug for everyone who arrives at the Home. We were also blessed by a local photographer Leilani Evans that provided a free photoshoot for our family. She did a great job and one of our pics is below. Please print out and post somewhere and pray for us as you are led.
Coffee
Please pray for the coffee business to grow. We are in "slow season" now on the island as one of the cruise ports closes each year from May until October. We are working with a distributor to find more outlets for the coffee. We know many single moms who need work and we pray we would be able to employ some of them again soon. Right now we are only roasting about once every two weeks. We really do covet your prayers for this ministry. Poverty here is like nothing you see in the states. There is no government assistance of any kind. Children die here from starvation and contaminated water. It is a sad reality. The churches here do wonderful ministries to help but the need is still great.
Donations for Mercy Ministry Needs can now be made through PayPal.
