One part of being in a third world country is adjusting to the overwhelming need around you. Yesterday at the children’s home, we met a little boy, maybe 18 mos. old, who had been found wandering the streets in Coxen Hole, the capitol city here. He has a deformed hand and ankle. He is one of the cutest kids you have ever seen– and no one even knows his name. As in any other place, the downtown area sees lots of drug abuse and poverty.
Travis and the boys have spent lots of time in the Colonia this week. There are some areas with open sewers which of course increases the mosquito problem there. Many unwed mothers, very young ones, live there and truly struggle to make it. Most of the homes there have no electricity or running water.
Due to the olympics being in Europe, some of the cruise ships have foregone their Caribbean cruises, substituting European tours. This has had a dramatic impact on the people here who depend on tourism. Many are scrambling for work wherever they can find it.
On a positive note- God is absolutely at work here. The church we are helping had 5 professions of faith this Sunday. It has been such a blessing to hear people tell of changed and restored lives because of their commitment to Christ. They also have a growing teen girls class which teaches God’s love, modesty ,and abstinence along with life skills. The goal is to give these girls a different future- one with much more hope. The girls are responding very well and changing their lives at a young age- praise God!
God truly does meet us in our need. It is in times like this- where we see great need all around us, that we must trust in His sovereignty. In our own power, we can do nothing of impact, but God can do it all! What an awesome God we serve. Seeing Him on display, especially in dark places, makes His light shine all the brighter. Glory to God.
